Even theater

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Sogar Theater Zurich (spelling: even theater ) is a literary theater in Zurich's industrial quarter in the city district 5 .

Since 2018 it has been directed by the director Ursina Greuel and the literary organizer Tamaris Mayer.

history

In 1998 Peter Brunner and Doris Aebi opened the self-financed theater in Zurich's city district 5. The former canteen in the office building at Josefstrasse 106 served as the stage. The program consisted of theater literature, adaptations of literary texts, staged readings and music theater productions. The Winterthur Volkart Foundation , owner of the building, supported the even theater with annual operating contributions. In July 2015, the “Dr. Stephan à Porta-Stiftung »acquired the property at Josefstrasse 106 and thus ensured that even theater could stay in the house. Since 2008 the theater has been one of the city-subsidized theaters. It is an integral part of the independent Zurich theater scene. The even theater is organized as an association.

Since the beginning, the even theater has been a professionally run small theater without its own ensemble. Right from the start - in addition to selected guest performances - the emphasis was on in-house or co-productions. Mainly world premieres or first performances were on the program, for which literary material of various kinds was adapted.

The even theater received several awards, such as the 2000 Theater Prize of the Canton of Zurich , the 2007 Social and Culture Prize of the ZFV companies , the Golden Medal of Honor of the Canton of Zurich in 2017 and the City of Zurich's Theater Recognition Prize in 2017.

In 2019 the property and thus the theater was extensively renovated. The former canteen has been converted into a professional theater space. Since then, a separate foyer with bar has been added to the theater hall.

program

The program focuses on the playful literary use of language. The exchange between writers, players and the audience is a special feature of even theater. In addition to the plays, a spoken word series is part of the regular program.

With the integrative long-term project “even zäme”, an open choir “even singing” was launched, a multinational team of local and immigrant cultural workers was set up for the bar and a theater project with residents of the neighborhood was implemented once a season.

A manifesto was drawn up for the operational and artistic interaction with one another.

financing

The “even theater” is a theater company subsidized by the City of Zurich and the Canton of Zurich. It is also financed by membership and sponsorship contributions, ticket income, room rentals and operating and production contributions from various private foundations.
