Sohini Ray

Sohini Ray (born August 25, 1966 in Calcutta , India ) is a classical Manipuri dancer , dance researcher, choreographer and anthropologist from India living in Los Angeles , United States .

Sohini Ray comes from a music-loving family. Her father, a doctor, played the sitar and her mother the piano. Ray learned Manipuri dance at the Manipuri Nartanalaya dance school in Calcutta from Guru Bipin Singh , Darshana Jhaveri and Kalavati Devi since she was seven . She had her initiation ceremony with Guru Bipin Singh at the age of eleven and began to dance professionally from the age of 14. She was also a research assistant at Guru Bipin Singh when she was 14 and received a National Manipuri grant from the Indian Ministry of Culture in 1982. At the same time, she studied at the Modern Highshool for Girls in Calcutta, where she also taught.

Scientific career

Ray studied at the University of Calcutta from 1985 to 1990 , earning her bachelor's degree in 1988 and her master's degree in anthropology in 1990 . 1993 to 2000 studied at the University of California, Los Angeles , where she received her Masters and Ph.D. in dance and anthropology. She was a Fellow at the Center for the Study of World Religions, Harvard Divinity School and a Faculty Fellow at the Humanities Research Institute, University of California, Irvine from 2000 to 2001 . Ray has taught at the University of California, Irvine, the University of California, Santa Barbara, and Santa Monica College, and has written many publications.

Dance career

Sohini Ray is the founder and artistic director of Manipuri Dance Visions - Institute of Manipuri Dance in southern California . She has appeared in many productions of classical Manipuri and was a choreographer and director, for example Harao-kummei: joyful celebrations in Manipuri dance, Gita-Govinda, Krishna-Ningshingba. Ray toured England, Poland and Germany in the summer of 2009. Further tours led through North America and India.
