The Soho was an experimental frigate in the Navy of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea , better known as North Korea , designed for submarine hunting .

History and characteristics

The frigate was planned at the end of the 1970s , laid down in June 1980 at the shipyard "Najin number 28" in Rajin under number 823 and launched in November 1981. It was a 75-meter-long, experimental double-hulled ship ( catamaran ), which was equipped with a helicopter deck and for anti-submarine defense as well as for surface targets and for air defense. The crew is estimated to be around 190 men. A possible reason for this extensive equipment of the ship could have been a failure of the North Korean Navy to determine a fixed role for the frigate.

In May 1982 it was put into service with the North Korean People's Navy. In 1983 the Soho made a few patrols from their home base Toejo Dong , the first time a Mil Mi-4PL was stationed on them for submarine hunting. However, towards the end of the same year she was returned to her yard for two and a half years. This was probably done because expectations, especially in terms of seaworthiness, could not be met. Probably for this reason only one ship of this type was completed. In the 1990s she was assigned to the Singyo-ri naval base, also located on the east coast, and the helicopter deck was renewed in the mid- 2000s . In June / July 2007, she was finally relocated to her yard, where she was scrapped in 2009.

Due to the strict confidentiality policy of North Korea, the specifications of the Soho can only be given in approximate values.
