Soho (West Midlands)

Soho is the name of the neighborhood northwest of the city of Birmingham .

location

It is on both sides of Soho Road between Kingstanding in the north and Winson Green in the south. - If you follow Soho Road out of town to the northwest, you will first come to Motorway M5 , one of the most important English motorways . West Bromwich, known for its football club, is right behind it .

history

As it was located right next to the city center, Soho was one of the first industrial areas in Birmingham. - Soho became known worldwide in the years 1770 to 1800, because Boulton & Watt had their headquarters here. This company built the steam engine improved by James Watt , which heralded the industrial age , and exported it all over the world. The first commercially usable gas lighting was also developed (by Watt employee William Murdoch ) in Soho.

Soho today

Soho is still closely linked to industry today. The Soho College of Management & Technology , a college for engineers, resides on Soho Road . A local pharmaceutical factory also bears the name of the district.
