The Soho Mint was a private mint located near Birmingham . The Soho Mint belonged to Matthew Boulton , who, together with James Watt, installed the world's first steam-powered embossing machines there in 1786. Another innovation was linked to the commitment of Jean-Pierre Droz , the inventor of ring embossing .

The Soho Mint produced coins for the East India Company , the Sierra Leone Company and English colonial money for areas such as Ceylon , Barbados and the Bahamas . The Cartwheel Pennies were minted for the English government . Embossing technology based on the Soho Mint pattern was exported to Russia , Spain and Denmark .
