Sokastro ( Greek Σώκαστρο [ ˈsɔkastrɔ ] ( n. Sg. )), Also Esokastro (Εσώκαστρο), is an uninhabited Greek island in the municipality of Karpathos in the South Aegean region , which belongs to the Dodecanese archipelago . Sokastro is located immediately northwest of the village of Lefkos on the west coast of the island of Karpathos and is separated from it by a 68 meter wide strait .
Traces of previous settlement can still be seen on the rocky island. During the Byzantine Empire , magazines and cisterns were built here. Later crusaders , who were called Franks by the Greeks , and gave the name to the opposite beach at Lefkos, Frangolimionas , stayed here for a while. The wide view along the coast made it possible to give warning signs as far as the Paleokastra rock near Arkasa . Today a circular route leads across the island plateau, in the northeast of the island there is a landing stage for small boats.
