Solanus Hermann

Solanus Hermann OSB (* 19th May 1909 in Thal as Rudolf Hermann ; † 13 December 1950 in the camp Manpo , North Korea ) was a Missionary Benedictines of Abbey Tokwon . He is considered a martyr in the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Rudolf Hermann initially worked in agriculture and then completed an apprenticeship as a painter and varnisher from 1923 to 1926. In February 1931 he asked for admission in Sankt Ottilien . On October 11, 1936, he was sent to Tŏkwon, where he worked in the building trade.

After the Tŏkwon monastery was dissolved by the North Korean secret police in 1949, he and his confreres were interned in various camps and prisons, mostly under poor conditions. He died of hunger, cold, and exhaustion in the Manpo concentration camp on the morning of December 13, 1950 .

beatification

The process of beatification by the Catholic Church began in May 2007. The Catholic Church accepted Brother Solanus as a martyr in the German martyrology of the 20th century .
