The Solar Circle Line GmbH (spelling SolarCircleLine GmbH) was founded in 2016 in Berlin by Andreas Behrens and Tim Schultze to operate passenger ships with solar power.

history

The Solar Circle Line was founded in 2016 in Berlin by the managing director of Solar Water World AG, Tim Schultze, and the managing director of the Berlin shipping company Stern und Kreisschiffahrt, Andreas Behrens, which was founded in 1888 . Stern und Kreisschiffahrt has a 24.9% stake in the start-up. It is to be the first Berlin shipping company to rely on 100 percent solar-electric powered passenger ships. For this purpose, from 2014 the Berlin Senate funded the planning for the construction of two Suncat 120 solar passenger shipsfor 180 people who are to be deployed on Berlin's waters. Solar Water World takes on the planning, design and, together with the Solar Circle Line, the subsequent use of these ships. The application for funding for construction was approved by the Berlin Senate in 2017. After a tender, the order went to the Kiebitzberg shipyard . Construction began in 2018 in the Havelberg shipyard hall.

The background to these “green” Berlin passenger ships is the efforts of the Senate to have Berlin shipping companies reduce their CO 2 emissions by 30 percent and their diesel emissions by 90 percent by 2030 . In spring 2018, the Association for Electric Shipping and Charging Infrastructure was founded in Berlin .

The first of the ships was delivered in December 2019 and transferred to Berlin to the berth at Treptower Park .
