Suncat 120 is one of the shipyard & Kiebitzberg GmbH & Co. KG for the Berlin shipping company Solar Circle Line built passenger ship type The first ship was delivered in the autumn of 2019, the second was delivered in July 2020th

The solar ship Solon is also part of Solar Water World

history

An application submitted by Solar Water World AG to promote the planning and construction of solar-powered aluminum passenger ships in catamaran design was approved by the Berlin Senate in 2014 . It led to the support of the Senate for the construction of the two Suncat 120 passenger ships for 180 people. The Solar Circle Line shipping company was founded by Solar Water World. It is supposed to operate the solar-electric powered passenger ships; Stern- und Kreisschiffahrt has a 24.9% stake as a minority shareholder.

The background for these "green" Berlin passenger ships is the efforts of the Berlin Senate that the Berlin shipping companies should reduce their CO2 emissions by 30 percent and their soot emissions by 90 percent by 2030 . In spring 2018, the Association for Electric Shipping and Charging Infrastructure was founded in Berlin .

On August 29, 2018, the keel was laid for the first solar passenger ship at the Kiebitzberg shipyard. The catamaran made of aluminum was left after completion of a mobile crane in the pile lift to water. At the beginning of December it was transferred from Havelberg to Berlin-Treptow and delivered to the Solar Circle Line. The second ship will follow in spring 2020, when the joint baptism is also planned. This planning was changed by the corona pandemic and the christening of the first solar ship took place on June 10, 2020 and the second ship will be delivered at the end of June 2020.

description

With a length of 36.50 meters and a width of 6.85 meters, the type of ship has a draft of 0.85 meters. The electric motors for propeller drive receive the necessary power for the drive (550 V, 446 kWh) as well as the general on-board network (48 V, 162 kWh) from accumulators with a total capacity of 606 kWh. The construction costs amounted to around € 2 million.

The battery ship with 48 solar modules in the solar roof in the entire upper deck and a lot of glass has a displacement of around 78 tons and an electrical drive power of the propeller motors of twice 45 kilowatts. One charge is enough for ten to twelve hours of driving. The batteries are charged during the journey via the solar modules that were installed on the roof of the ship and from solar filling stations in Köpenick and Treptower Park. From here it is used for tours, conferences or parties.
