Solatopupa similis is a species of grain snails (Chondrinidae) from the suborder of land snails (Stylommatophora).

features

The slim, spindle-shaped case is 9.0 to 16 mm high and 3.0 to 4.2 mm wide. It has 8¼ to 9½ moderately arched turns, which are separated from each other by a moderately deep seam. It is matt white to bluish white in color with more or less radial brown spots. The surface is irregularly striped to finely ribbed and does not shine. The mouth rim is widened, ends thin and sharp and has a barely thickened white lip. The mouth has six teeth or folds: two clear, roughly equally strong palatal teeth, rarely an infrapalatal tooth, a clear parietal tooth, a strong columellar tooth and a weak subcolumellar tooth, which can occasionally be missing, and an angular tooth, the is connected to the edge of the mouth. The last turn is slightly obliquely flattened and indistinctly keeled at the base. The navel is missing or at least very narrow.

Similar species

The species differs from all other Solatopupa species by its characteristic mouth reinforcement .

Geographical distribution and habitat

The distribution area of Solatopupa similis extends from north-east Spain (Gerona province) along coastal areas of the western Mediterranean up to the height of Rome. In France the area extends as far as Savoy. There is a deliberately abandoned colony in the canton of Ticino (southern Switzerland). The species is also known from Sardinia. The species lives on warm, dry, sun-facing limestone rocks, on rubble, old walls and ruins. In Switzerland it rises up to 700 m above sea level. The animals feed on lichens, which cover the limestone and which they graze with their rasping tongue.
