Solbach's book of arms

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Solbachsche Wappenbuch is a handwritten coat of arms in the archive of the Tyrolean Matriculation Foundation in Innsbruck , which was created in the second half of the 16th century. It contains 1296 coat of arms drawings that Konrad Fischnaler attributed to the painter David Solbach († 1591), who worked in Brixen .

Structure of the book of arms

The book of arms originally consisted of two parts, which were only tied together in the 19th century into a single volume with a leather back. The leaves from 1 to 249 were also counted anew. The first, around 200 sheets thick, older part clearly shows the influence of Conrad Grünenberg's book of arms from the 15th century. It contains Gothic coat of arms drawings in a luxurious distribution. The second, 49-sheet, younger part of the volume is an independent, only fragmentarily preserved coat of arms of good artistic quality. The 49 preserved, partly damaged leaves ( fol. 201–249) contain 1296 mostly colored coats of arms designs as miniatures in more or less careful pen drawings. There are also some coats of arms stencils as preliminary drawings. The coats of arms designs are all free creations in the spirit and forms of the Renaissance . Almost all coats of arms are inscribed with inscriptions from different hands. Due to a few missing sheets (an older sheet count is still partially recognizable) and the renewal of the binding, the original sequence of the coats of arms was disrupted.
