Barbara Höfler

Barbara Höfler (* 1938 in Wuppertal ; née Bildstein ) is a German doctor .

Life

Barbara Höfler received her doctorate in 1972 from the Medical Faculty of the University of Cologne and worked for years as a general practitioner in her own practice. Subsequently, until her early retirement in 1997, she was Medical Director at the Medical Service of the North Rhine Health Insurance in Cologne.

Development aid in Haiti

During a trip to Haiti in 1997, she saw the need of street children in the capital Port-au-Prince . After returning to Germany, she continued her training in tropical medicine and learned Creole . Since 1998 she has been treating sick and injured street children in the slum Cité Soleil in the north of Port-au-Prince free of charge. With a converted off-road vehicle, she set up a mobile ambulance. In 2001 she founded the association Lespwa - Hope for Children in Haiti , which supports her work on site with income from exhibitions, benefit concerts and collections.

Höfler supports the “Work of the Small Schools of Father Bohnen” of the Salesians of Don Bosco . She carries out weekly preventive examinations for preschool children and gives parents hygiene and education lessons. After the earthquake in January 2010 , she criticized the inadequate coordination of international aid measures and helped rebuild the destroyed facilities. The Cologne photographer Frank Domahs documented Höfler's work two years after the earthquake.

Honors

On December 17, 2012, Barbara Höfler was awarded the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany, 1st class, by Vice President Ulrike Schwarz for her long-term commitment to humanitarian issues .
