Solo (alternatively Bengawan Solo , Bengawan is Old Javanese for river ) is the longest river on the Indonesian island of Java . Among other things, Surakarta lies on its banks .

It is about 600 km long. In addition to its importance as a waterway for the inhabitants and agriculture of the western and northern part of the island, there are also important sites of paleoanthropological excavations. Some discoveries of early human remains have been made in various places in its river valley, particularly in Sangiran , including the discovery of the first ancient human fossils to be found outside of Europe, such as the skull of the Java man .
