Soma Kömür İşletmeleri A.Ş. (Soma Mining Inc., German translation about "Kohlebetriebe Soma AG ") is a Turkish coal mining company based in Istanbul and one of the largest coal producers in the region. In 2014, it had 7,500 employees and produced 2.5 million tons of coal annually, according to information on its website. He owns the Eynez lignite mine (Turkish: Eynez Maden Ocağı ), where the Soma mine disaster took place, in which at least 301 people were killed.

The Soma Kömür İşletmeleri A.Ş. is part of Soma Holding , which by its own account is the largest private coal producer in the country. It was founded in 1984. The first coal was mined in 1986. Soma Holding has also been active in the construction industry since 2010. In 2005, the Turkish State Coal Production Company ( Türkiye Kömür İşletmeleri Kurumu TKİ) granted it the right to extract around 18 million tons of coal. In September 2009, the mining company received a concession from Ciner Holding to produce around 15 million tons of coal from the Soma -Eynez deposits. The Eynez mine produces 2.5 million tons of coal annually. The company has 5,500 employees, including 5,000 underground miners and about 130 engineers as technical staff, according to information on its website. In May 2014, Soma Holding said in a press release that there were 7,500 employees at Soma Kömür İşletmeleri A.Ş.

In addition to mining in the Soma-Eynez region, the holding company also operates hard coal mining in the Zonguldak region .

The head of Soma Holding, Alp Gürkan, said in an interview with the daily Hürriyet in 2012 that the cost of coal in Soma had been reduced from $ 130–140  per ton at the time of mining by TKİ to $ 23.80 per ton.
