Soma Weiss

Soma Weiss (* 1898 in Bistritz , Transylvania , then Austria-Hungary , † 1942 in the USA ) was a Hungarian-American doctor. He is one of the namesake of the Mallory-Weiss syndrome .

Life

Soma Weiss was born in Bistritz (Hungarian: Beszterce ) and emigrated to the USA in 1920 after the First World War . He graduated from Cornell Medical College in 1923 and became chief physician at Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston . In 1933 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences . Weiss died in 1942 of a ruptured aneurysm , diagnosed by himself.

Weiss's most important contributions concern his work on cardiovascular diseases, especially heart defects and the role of the nervous system in cardiovascular physiology .
