Gerhard Pfahler

Gerhard Pfahler (born August 12, 1897 in Freudenstadt ; † February 20, 1976 in Tübingen ) was a German psychologist and educationalist .

Life

Pfahler participated in World War I as a war volunteer from 1916 to 1918 and was seriously wounded in 1917. In January 1919 he was released as a lieutenant in the reserve. After training as a primary school teacher , he studied education, psychology, constitutional law and economics in Tübingen and Munich from 1921 to 1924. In 1924 he received his doctorate in Munich. After his habilitation in 1928, he became a private lecturer at the Eberhard Karls University in Tübingen . In 1929 he was a professor at the Pedagogical Institute in Rostock , but moved in 1930 to the Prussian Pedagogical Academy in Altona and from there in 1932 to the Pedagogical Academy in Frankfurt am Main . In 1934 he became a full professor at the University of Giessen and was rector of the university from November 1934 to March 1937. In 1938 he first moved to the Georg-August University of Göttingen as a professor , but was appointed to the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen that same year .

Pfahler, who had been a member of the National Socialist German Workers' Party for the first time in 1922 , rejoined the NSDAP in 1937. He was also a member of the SA , in which he was promoted to storm leader . Pfahler also joined the anti-Semitic religious community of German Christians and, together with Johann Duken , was editor of the journal Glaube und Volk in the decision from 1934 .

Together with Erich Rudolf Jaensch and others, he dealt with so-called "race psychology", the ascription of certain characteristics to certain races . In 1939 he published the treatise Race and Education and in 1940 Race Cores of the German People and Their Mixtures .

In 1945, Pfahler was released by order of the French military government. From 1945 to 1947 he was interned in the Balingen internment camp. Since 1952 Pfahler taught again in Tübingen. In 1959 he was given the status of exempt professor.

His books, Why Education in Spite of Inheritance , and Christian Responsibility , Armanen-Verlag , Leipzig 1934, and Race and Education, Quelle & Meyer, Leipzig 1939, which were written during the Nazi era , were included in the list of literature to be sorted out in the Soviet Zone .
