Origin of the Somali Current

The Somali Current (formerly Malabar Current ) is a warm ocean current on the northeast African coast in the Indian Ocean .

It is the eastern equivalent of the Gulf Stream and arises off the Somali coast from December to March in the direction of the equator . This flow is strongly influenced by monsoon winds .

The Somali current is shaped by seasonal changes influenced by the southwest monsoons and the northeast monsoons. In the months of June to September, the warm southwest monsoons move the coastal waters to the northeast, creating buoyancy .
