The Weight is an Austrian rock band based in Vienna . Original compositions in English in the style of the 1960s and 1970s are played. Related bands include The Who , The Rolling Stones , Led Zeppelin , The Black Crowes , Deep Purple , The Band or Rival Sons . The self-titled debut album The Weight made it to number 38 in the official Austrian charts. In February 2018, The Weight was nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award in the Hard & Heavy category.

history

In 2014 The Weight released their first EP, Keep Turning . In the German BreakOut magazine, the EP made it to record tip of the month in the September 2015 issue.

In the spring of 2017 the band released a "Deluxe Edition" of the EP Keep Turning expanded by seven live tracks and went on an extended tour through Germany, Austria and Switzerland for the second time.

Another big tour through the German-speaking countries followed in autumn and winter 2017.

Up to this point in time, The Weight were the opening act for several international greats such as B. Foreigner , Smokie , The BossHoss , Rival Sons , Uriah Heep , Ten Years After , Bastille or Manfred Mann's Earth Band appeared.

In September and November 2017 The Weight went on tour with the band The New Roses , whose album "One More for the Road" had previously made it into the top 20 of the German charts.

For the release of the debut album, the band said they turned down offers from established record companies and as a result launched their own label Heavy Rhythm & Roll Records in 2017 . The band justified this step with wanting to act artistically and commercially independently.

As the first harbinger of the album, The Weight released the single Trouble on the newly founded label in August 2017 . The music video for this was produced by the Viennese artist collective Atzgerei . In the clip, more than 40 album covers by well-known artists such as Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple etc. are reproduced. These are embodied by Vetter, Boebel, Moosbrugger and Jussel themselves. The music video made it into the official selection at the Experimental, Dance & Music Film Festival 2018 in Toronto, and the Myward Music Video Award. The music video was also named "Winner Best Music Video September 2017" at the Around International Film Festival 2018 in Barcelona and was also included in the "Official Selection" there.

In the December 2017 issue of Guitar Magazine, the single was transcribed in text and sheet music and printed.

The album "The Weight" was released on November 17, 2017 in Germany, Austria and Switzerland and was presented live to an audience on the same day in the ORF Radio Kulturhaus Saal in Funkhaus Wien . The release took place in cooperation with Rough Trade Distribution via the band's own label Heavy Rhythm & Roll Records.

In February 2018, The Weight were nominated for the Amadeus Austrian Music Award in the Hard & Heavy category.

Another headlining tour in Germany with the band WolveSpirit has been announced for spring 2018 .

style

Although, according to the press, the style of the band is in the area of classic rock, the musicians play Heavy Rhythm & Roll according to their own definition . According to the band, this is intended to express the striving for a demarcation from the usual genre thinking. In general, the relevant trade press names artists from the 60s and 70s such as The Who, The Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The Band, but also more recent bands such as The Black Crowes or Rival Sons as related bands.

The Weight (album)

The self-titled debut album was created during several recording sessions in Vorarlberg and Vienna. While the drum tracks were still recorded with the help of a producer in Dornbirn, most of the overdubs were recorded in the band's own recording studio in Vienna. Sportfreunde Stiller and Die Ärzte producer Oliver Zülch took over the mix of all the album tracks . The mastering was carried out by Matin Scheer, who also mastered the album "Schick Schock" by the Austrian band Bilderbuch (Band) and was awarded an Amadeus in the "Best Sound" category.

The album The Weight was released on CD, vinyl and digital.

Criticism While the album made it into the top 10 of the editorial charts in the music magazines Rock Hard and Visions, the same was true for the song Hard Way in Classic Rock (magazine) . The lack of innovation is occasionally criticized by critics. Nevertheless, the album received mostly positive reactions in the relevant trade press:

“The whole thing looks so fresh and organic that you can treat this vinyl version to two or three runs on the turntable. [...] This band doesn't have to hide behind the international retro rock guild. "

“It is of course not a bit innovative, but it has soul and charm and looks very professional in terms of craftsmanship and production technology. 7/10. "

“The Viennese debut album is entirely in the spirit of the testosterone-pregnant blues rock of the 70s. 3/5. "

“By far the best classic rock band from Austria is celebrating its debut and passing the baptism of fire with flying colors. 7.5 / 10. "

“In fact, there's a big fly in the ointment in the middle of this authentic rock party. The enthusiastic men know the adored rock music of the 60s and 70s inside and out. In a good 50 minutes, however, it also becomes apparent that the four have nothing to add to the genre. 5.5 / 10. "

- CDStarts.de

“An album that could be wonderfully cruised over country roads or highways in an old Cadillac. 8/10. "

“[...] an incredible debut. [...] Great songs, played great, produced great. "

- Guido Tartarotti from the daily newspaper Kurier (daily newspaper)

Keep Turning (EP)

The EP was recorded within a few days in the Far Beyond Studios in Ebreichsdorf near the Austrian capital Vienna. The production was done by Matthias Reithofer and the band themselves. Reithofer was also responsible for the mix and mastering.

The EP Keep Turning was released on CD, vinyl and digital.

Criticism The strong musical roots in the 60s and 70s were emphasized. The successful songwriting as well as the authentic revival of the Woodstock era were positively highlighted. For example, the unsatisfactory sound of the sound carrier or the fluctuating quality of the compositions were criticized.

Press quotes

"Good start", one would like to call out to the Austrian band. [...] Especially with the Humble-Pie-meets-Trapeze-suspicious "Keep Turning" you are already very close to the goal. Unfortunately, a powerful sound is still missing on this EP, a real oomph. 7.5 / 10 "

“Great, great, great !!! The Viennese band The Weight celebrates a late sixties / seventies rock sound at its finest, which brings back memories of Woodstock, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin and The Who. "

- Martin Pietzsch from the breakout

“The Viennese sound primarily American, with a lot of organ, now and then female choir singing and a really warm production. 12/15 "

- Andreas Schiffmann from musikreviews.de

“The Weight forego the installation of modern elements, here it goes straight through five songs in the style of times long past. The craft and songwriting are right, so the whole thing is absolutely fine. "

- Bernhard Kleinbruckner from SLAM alternative music magazine
