Somatochlora georgiana is a dragonfly species from the family of falcon dragonflies (Corduliidae), which belong to the large dragonflies (Anisoptera).

features

The imago of Somatochlora georgiana measures 48-49 mm, of which 34 to 37 millimeters on the abdomen ( abdominal omitted), which is relatively small within the genus. In terms of color, the species is a bit out of the ordinary compared to other species of the genus, as the otherwise greenish metallic sheen is hardly present and the brown copper-like color predominates. This gives the species the common name Coppery Emerald . The yellow color of the basal segments and the two rings on the second segment are also atypical in the genus. The abdominal appendages are brown.

The part of the chest ( thorax ) to which the wings attach, the so-called pterothorax , is very slightly hairy and dull brownish. There are yellow stripes on the side, the second of which is comparatively long. The hind wings measure 32 to 34 millimeters. The wings are transparent and the veins and the pterostigma are brownish.

The face is yellow except for a black stripe on the labrum .

Spread and time of flight

The species is common in the east and southeast of the United States . It flies between May and August.
