Somayeh Yazdani ( Persian سمیه یزدانی; * October 6, 1990 in Schahr-e Kord ) is an Iranian cyclist . She is the first female cyclist in her country to win a medal at Asian road championships.

Athletic career

Somayeh Yazdani comes from an athletic family. At the age of 20 she started competitive cycling - against the background that public cycling by women in Iran is still controversial. There are only a few public places where the athletes can train unhindered, and then only in full-body clothing and hijab , often with male companions who protect them from angry passers-by. Yazdani's father was initially against his daughter opting for cycling: she should look for a sport that is practiced in a hall.

In 2016, Yazdani finished third in the national championship in the individual time trial . In 2017 she became the Iranian champion in this discipline and runner-up in road racing . She was supposed to be the first Iranian cyclist to take part in the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta , but fell during training so that she could not start. In 2019 she won both national titles on the road . Also in 2019 she was third in the road race at the Asian road championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan . She became the first Iranian female cyclist to win a medal at Asian road championships. The Iranian Sports Minister Masoud Soltanifar publicly honored the athlete for her performance, the Iranian media spoke of Yazdani having "made history".

Yazdani then stated that her sporting goal was to participate in the UCI Road World Championships and the Olympic Games . In October 2019 she signed a contract with the newly formed Spanish racing team Teika-VIB-DFM Renta Car . This makes her the second Iranian cyclist after Mandana Dehghan to compete for a UCI women's team .
