Somebody's Knockin 'on My Door [ ˈsʌmbədiz ˈnɒkɪn ɒn maɪ dɔː ] ( English for: "Somebody knocking on my door"; also Somebody's Knockin' ) is a blues rock song by the American musician JJ Cale , which was played by the British rock guitarist after Cale's death Eric Clapton was made public.

backgrounds

After Cale died, Clapton attended the funeral in 2013. The Briton got into conversation with Christine Lakeland, Cale's widow. She and Clapton talked about leftover recordings that the American had not previously released. Clapton asked Lakeland if he could get the pieces. Shortly thereafter, Lakeland provided the British singer with two compact discs with about 20 titles. In addition to Can't Let You Do It , Clapton decided to cover Somebody's Knockin ' as well . In an interview with the music magazine Guitar World , the guitarist said: "There's another song: Somebody's Knockin '. And I think we improved it with my recording. I hope Christine [Lakeland] will forgive me. But I think our version turned out better […] ”.

Clapton played the song while touring the Eric Clapton World Tour 2014 , 70th Birthday Celebration and Japan Residency Tour from 2014 to 2016. In 2015, the track appeared on the live album and concert film Slowhand at 70 . A year later, the Briton released a studio version on the album I Still Thu .

The Brit arranged the piece in E major blues . It is unknown what key Cale wrote the song in.

Criticism

Journalists from Billboard magazine described the cover version of the Briton as "left out". The Daily Telegraph's critic James Hall says Clapton can play "convincing guitar solos as part of the title." He noted that the British rock musician appeared "totally focused [and] lost in the music [...]" during a performance of Somebody's Knockin ' . Melissa Ruggieri of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution also noted that Clapton's performance at a concert evokes “graceful, quick fingerwork”, especially with this piece.
