Something's Gotta Give is a song whose lyrics and music were written by Johnny Mercer for Fred Astaire in 1954 . It was released as part of the soundtrack of the 1955 musical film Daddy Langbein (Daddy Long Legs) . The song received an Oscar nomination .
song lyrics
The song asks the question of what happens when an irresistible force hits an immovable object - here intended as a metaphor for the encounter between a classy woman and an older man who is tired of life every now and then. The man will do what the heart desires (Something's Gotta Give ...) and kiss the woman, because there has to be something the heart desires. When an irrepressible smile like yours warms an old unforgiving heart like mine, a kiss follows. Because this temptation cannot be resisted for long. The lyrics echo what goes on in the film, in which Daddy Long Legs (Fred Astaire), a reserved man in his 50s, falls in love with a woman ( Leslie Caron ) who is about half his age.
Cover versions
The best-selling version of the song came from The McGuire Sisters , who achieved # 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1955 . Sammy Davis, Jr.'s interpretation of the same year was also popular . His version also made it into the Top 10 of the Billboard Pop Charts, culminating at # 9. Gale Storm and Stuart Foster also released their version in 1955. The following year Mel Tormé released a version of the song on his album Sings Fred Astaire . Also Les Brown took up the song on his album Swing & Jazz for Dancing on.
Frank Sinatra sang the song in December 1958 for his album Come Dance with Me! Sinatra's version was also featured in the 37-minute film fragment Something's Got to Give . The film was never completed because Marilyn Monroe , who starred alongside Dean Martin , passed away before the interrupted filming could resume.
In 1964 Ella Fitzgerald covered the song and published it on her album Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Johnny Mercer Songbook arranged by Nelson Riddle . The pop and jazz singer Jack Jones released the song in 1965 on his album Dear Heart ; other versions laid u. a. Rosemary Clooney and Sheila Jordan in front.
Johnny Mercer also sang his composition himself in 1974.
In the computer role-playing game Fallout: New Vegas , Dean Domino from the Dead Money Add the song is put in the mouth, but Bing Crosby's record cover is shown.

Johnny Mercer was nominated with the song at the Academy Awards 1956 in the category "Best Motion Picture Song" for an Oscar , which went to Sammy Fain and Paul Francis Webster and their song Love Is a Many Splendored Thing from the literary film All Glory on Earth .
