The gold medal was actually awarded to Vladimir Kazakov by the United Team . However, after the Paralympic Games ended, illegal substances were found in his blood and he was subsequently disqualified. This gave Masakazu Saito, his opponent in the final fight, the gold medal. James Mastro was originally supposed to receive silver as compensation, but the award never took place.
