The Summer Arena Baden or Städtische Arena Baden is an Art Nouveau theater in Baden in Lower Austria with an openable glass roof and organisationally belongs to the Baden stage . Michael Lakner has been the artistic director since May 2017 .

history

In 1841 the theater director Franz Pokorny had the first summer arena, a timber structure without a roof, built in the Badner Kurpark. In order to make this repairs and weather-prone theater independent of the weather, the Baden municipal council decided on December 7th, 1905 to implement a project by the architect Rudolf Krausz . Based on an iron structure of the company Gridl was built in a record time of 20 February to 15 June 1906 Sommerarena for 700 visitors with a unique in the Art Nouveau architecture roof. This unique piece of the open-air theater species has a sliding glass construction that can be opened or closed depending on the weather.

During the Nazi era , the Badner Sommerarena was part of the Gaubühne Niederdonau and remained closed from 1939. Even in the turmoil of the post-war period from 1945 to 1955, the theater could not be used as an occupied object. The arena, which had been renovated in the meantime, was not reopened until June 29, 1957 after a long break.

The listed summer arena in Baden, in which mainly operettas are performed, is one of the most beautiful summer theaters in Austria today.

On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the summer arena, the operettas Der Bettelstudent by Carl Millöcker , Friedrich Zell and Richard Genée , Clivia by Nico Dostal and Charles Amberg, and The Circus Princess by Emmerich Kálmán , Julius Brammer and Alfred Grünwald were performed in 2006 .
