Sonja Eggerickx (* 1947 ) is a Belgian humanist and former president of the International Humanist and Ethical Union (IHEU).

Life

Eggerickx first grew up in a strongly Catholic village near Brussels and attended the community school. The change to the state secondary school in Brussels opened her eyes to the relativity of world views. She studied at the University of Ghent and worked until her retirement in September 2012 as a teacher and later a school board member in the subject of “moral education”. She began to get involved beyond her work as a teacher for “non-denominational ethics” and was the editor of MORES , a humanistic magazine for teachers. She attributes it to her feminist ethos (“Don't complain that there are no women in this position if you don't start to change it yourself.”) That she applied for outstanding leadership positions and held them successfully for many years.

Eggerickx is also President of Unie Vrijzinnige Verenigingen . In April 2006 she was elected President of the IHEU, making her the first woman in this position. Before that, she was IHEU Vice President from 2002 to 2006. At the end of May 2015, after nine years at the helm of the international humanist umbrella organization, she finished her voluntary work, which required a lot of travel.
