Sonja Lahnstein-Kandel (* 1950 in Zagreb , Yugoslavia ) is a German economist and the initiator and managing partner of step21 - Initiative for Tolerance and Responsibility . Youth demands!

Lahnstein-Kandel attended elementary school and high school in Zagreb . After graduating from the British Gymnasium in Hamburg in 1968, she obtained the General Certificate of Education of the University of London. In 1969 she studied journalism and political science at Ann Arbor University, Michigan. From 1969 to 1973 she studied economics in Hamburg, and in 1974 she finally finished her studies with a diploma in economics.

She then worked for the European Commission in Brussels , the International Monetary Fund in Washington DC, the World Bank in Washington DC and Bertelsmann AG .

In 1998 Sonja Lahnstein-Kandel initiated the non-profit GmbH step21 - Initiative for Tolerance and Responsibility. She takes care of the establishment, development and coordination of the processes of step21. In addition, she founded the STEP 21 foundation in March 2004. Since 2002 she has been chairwoman of the board of the German Association of Sponsors at the University of Haifa , Israel , and a member of the supervisory board of the University of Haifa (deputy chairwoman of the supervisory board 2014-2017).

She is also the executive chairwoman of the Association for the Promotion of the Israel Museum. She is also a member of the Board of Governors of the University of Haifa , the Advisory Board of the Foundation Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe and the Board of Trustees of the Israelitisches Krankenhaus Hamburg (from 2004). Sonja Lahnstein-Kandel was a consultant to Women's World Banking until 1998 and a member of the board of AGIS (Association of German International Schools) until 2000.

Lahnstein-Kandel has been the recipient of the Federal Cross of Merit on Ribbon since 2004 . In 2017 Sonja Lahnstein-Kandel was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Haifa and an Honorary Fellowship from the Israel Museum Jerusalem.

She is married to the former Federal Minister of Finance Manfred Lahnstein . They have a daughter together and from Manfred Lahnstein's first marriage, the son and current financial manager Florian Lahnstein .
