history

Backyard of the "Sun" in Hospitalstrasse after the outbuildings were torn down (2011)

The structural origins of the building go back to the 15th century. This makes it one of the oldest surviving houses in Eisenach. Since then, the building, which is conveniently located at the western entrance to the then fortified town center, has been used as an inn. Martin Luther is said to have lived in the building for a short time during his stay as a singer in Eisenach . From 23 to 27 August 1873, the fifth congress of the Social Democratic Workers' Party took place in the “Sonne” inn . Around 1900 the building was rebuilt and a second floor was added.

On March 19, 1976, the youth club of the Eisenach automobile plant was opened in the "Sonne" . In 1979 Otto Waalkes gave an unofficial concert in the club, which was remarkable because this performance by an artist from the Federal Republic was not coordinated with the GDR authorities at the time. An Ottifant painted on the wall by Waalkes commemorates this event.

The youth club closed on December 31, 1990. The Treuhandanstalt sold the building to a private investor who ran the facility until 1997 and then closed it for good . In 2004, the municipal housing company of the city of Eisenach bought the building at auction to enable the structural protection of the cultural monument.

The dilapidated side wings along Hospitalstrasse and the hall in the backyard had to be torn down in 2009; What remained was a vaulted cellar secured with a temporary roof. In 2011 a security concept was drawn up for the main building, which has been implemented gradually since 2014.

In the late autumn of 2014, the structural securing of the building began, a beam structure was attached to support the front, foundations and walls were stabilized, and inside the removal of ailing components affected by dry rot was started. Parts worth preserving should remain so that the building, which has then been secured and partially gutted, can be sold to potential redevelopment agencies.

Concepts for the future use of the building were not available by the end of 2014. Plans to use it as assisted living have been dashed, and plans are now being made to use it as a residential and commercial building with the option of an extension in the backyard.
