The solar eclipse of August 22, 1998 was an annular solar eclipse that was observed in Southeast Asia and Oceania . The central line ran through Sumatra , Malaysia , Brunei , Kalimantan and then further east in the Pacific, north past the islands of Sulawesi and New Guinea . Singapore was just south of the central zone. The darkness was partially visible in southeast China and all of Australia.
