The partial solar eclipse of September 2, 1997 was observed in Australia and New Zealand and in East Antarctica. In Western Australia , the full course of the eclipse could not be observed because the sun did not rise until the eclipse. While in South Australia the moon covered half of the sun's disk, in northern Australia the moon just touched the sun. New Zealand had better visibility conditions, where the solar eclipse took place at noon.
