The solar eclipse of March 9, 1997 was a total solar eclipse in which the central line stretched from Mongolia through eastern Siberia to the Arctic Ocean. In contrast to the sparsely populated totality area, large populous areas such as eastern China , Korea and Japan were in the zone in which the moon could still cover over half of the solar disk.
