Sunday bid

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Under Sunday obligation (also Sunday obligation ) understands the Roman Catholic Church , the Church bid , on Sundays and on holy days of Holy Mass devoutly attend (can. 1247 CIC). It applies to all Roman Catholic Christians from the age of seven and is derived from the third of the ten commandments and from the inner nature of the church as communion . Whoever takes part in a Holy Mass, wherever it is celebrated in Catholic rite on the holiday itself or the evening before, obeys the commandment. The faithful are obliged to receive communion only once a year, if possible during Easter (can. 920 CIC).

Of course, this only applies to a limited extent: Exceptions - such as B. be mentioned in the Catholic adult catechism published by the German Bishops' Conference . B. be:

  • unreasonable burdens (e.g. illness, long distances)
  • Charitable obligations (e.g. caring for critically ill relatives, caring for small children)
  • severe personal disadvantages (e.g. risk of breaking up a marriage)

In the event of prolonged incapacity, the believer is obliged to ensure that his religious life does not grow cold. The Catholic Adult Catechism mentions that it will usually look for alternatives (in the strict sense this is not an obligation of its own); Examples include: “Prayer, reading the scriptures, meditation, receiving communion from the sick by communion helpers, attending a church service on a weekday, worshiping the word at an outdoor station”.

development

Complaints about staying away from the assembly of the congregation already exist in the New Testament ( Hebrews 10.25  EU ). The oldest evidence of the obligation to attend mass is the resolutions of the Synod of Elvira , which took place between 295 and 314 (i.e. before the turning point in Constantine ), but which only applied to the dioceses in Spain. It is not possible to clearly determine when the command was applied across the church. In the Code of Canon Law in 1917 and 1983, it is confirmed.

In his apostolic letter Dies Domini (1998), Pope John Paul II affirmed the importance of the Sunday commandment.
