The Sony Center for the Performing Arts (Hummingbird Center) is a large theater building in Toronto , Ontario , Canada . It is located in the immediate vicinity of the main thoroughfare King Street and Front Street East 1. It was opened in 1960 and has 3,191 seats. Since the opening, world-famous theater performances have been staged there with countless international stars standing on the stage of the center.

The repertoire includes around 20 productions, which are played alternately or in blocks, and there are also many concerts. The Sony Center closed its doors on June 26, 2008 to October 1, 2010. During this time the center was completely renovated. The work was completed on schedule.

In 2006 planning permission was granted by the City of Toronto to build a tall residential building. This building is directly adjacent to the theater. The building was designed by the well-known architect Daniel Libeskind , who previously worked on the Royal Ontario Museum. The new residential building, known as the L Tower , reaches a height of 200 meters with 58 floors. Completion of the building is scheduled for the end of 2014.
