The Massey Hall is a concert hall in downtown Toronto known for historical recordings and performances by artists and politicians.

The building was completed in 1894 - the same year the first concerts took place ( Handel's Messiah as the opening concert on June 14th) - and designed by the architect Sidney Badgley (1850–1917) in a neoclassical style . Inside, the Chicago Opera and the Alhambra served as inspiration. It is named in memory of his son by the businessman and philanthropist Hart Massey (1823-1896), the owner of the company Massey Manufacturing (later Massey-Harris or Massey Ferguson ), who financed the construction. The address is 178 Victoria Street and the entrance is on Shuter Street.

It has 2700 seats and is still used for concert events. The place of performance of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra (since 1923 in the Massey Hall) and the Toronto Mendelssohn Choir (whose place of performance was the Massey Hall since 1895) has been the Roy Thomson Hall since 1982 (named after the publisher Roy Thomson, but previously as New Massey Hall), which is also where the Toronto International Film Festival takes place. It is managed by the same company as Massey Hall ( Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall ) and Glenn Gould Studios at the CBS Broadcasting Center.

In 1981 it was listed on the National Historic Sites of Canada . For its centenary in 1994, Massey Hall was renovated and received a bar ( Centuries ) with numerous photos of the artists who performed here.

Artists such as Glenn Gould and Oscar Peterson , conductors such as Arturo Toscanini and opera singers such as Maria Callas , Enrico Caruso and Luciano Pavarotti , but also politicians such as Winston Churchill have performed in the Massey Hall . In 1953 the legendary Massey Hall Concert ( Jazz at Massey Hall ) with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie took place here.
