Soot channel

The soot channel , Norwegian Sootkanalen is a channel in the community Eidskog in Norwegian Fylke Innlandet . It was built by Engebret Soot (1786-1859) in 1847–1849 and has Norway's oldest lock gates . It made possible the rafting of tree trunks to the sawmills of Halden . Over a length of 1.5 km, 16 (originally 15) locks bridged between the lakes Skjervangen ( 176  moh. ) And Mortsjølungen ( 201  moh. ) A height difference of 25 m. The building was opened on July 20, 1849. Up to 600 workers were involved in its construction.

The canal was in operation until 1932 and had its highest transport volume in 1920 with 222,768 tree trunks.

The Gramsmobahn was part of the transport system on which the wood was transported by train between Mortsjølungen and Tvillingtjern.
