The Sophie-Charlotte-Platz is a garden-like town square in Berlin district of Charlottenburg .

location

The southern end of Schloßstraße opens into the square , the line of sight that runs towards the courtyard in front of Charlottenburg Palace at the northern end . In the south it is bounded by the Kaiserdamm , in the west by the street of the same name and in the north by the Horstweg.

history

The square was laid out in 1892 and named after Queen Sophie-Charlotte , who had the nearby Charlottenburg Palace, still called Lützenburg at the time , expanded into her residence. After her death, the castle was renamed after her. It later gave its name to the city of Charlottenburg, which is now a district of Berlin.

The underground station of the same name opened in 1908 . In 1910 the square was redesigned with lawns, borders, hedges and trees. It has largely been preserved in this form to this day, as the surrounding area was hardly damaged in the Second World War . However, in the 1930s , the Nazis had the decorative portals of the subway torn down as part of their “ Germania ” plans. These were not restored after the end of the war. Only plot No. 1 is assigned to the square, which houses the corner building (Kaiserdamm 1 and Horstweg 42), an area of the State Criminal Police Office and a police station.
