Princess Sophie of Württemberg

Sophie Friederike Mathilde Princess of Württemberg (born June 17, 1818 in Stuttgart , † June 3, 1877 in Huis ten Bosch ) was the first wife of the Dutch King Wilhelm III. Queen of the Netherlands from 1849 to 1877.

Life

Sophie, Queen of the Netherlands

Born as the daughter of King Wilhelm I of Württemberg and the Russian Grand Duchess Katharina Pawlowna , she was raised by her aunt because her mother died shortly after her birth.

On June 18, 1839, one day after her 21st birthday, she married her cousin Wilhelm, Prince of Orange, in Stuttgart. The marriage, which resulted in three sons, was downright unhappy, and Sophie spent a lot of time with her family in Stuttgart.

Sophie conducted a lively correspondence with heads of state and other well-known contemporaries. Her correspondence with Lady Malet was edited by the writer Hella Haasse .

All three sons of Sophie and Wilhelm died before their father, who after Sophie's death married the much younger Princess Emma zu Waldeck and Pyrmont . The future Queen Wilhelmina comes from Wilhelm's second marriage .
