Sophya is a band from Israel that was founded in spring 1996 by Idan Karutchi (guitar, synthesizer, sampler, vocals), Sonja Rozenblum (vocals, programming) and Shai Ledder (bass). Stylistically, the trio moves between ethereal , pop and trip-hop .
history
After a long period of experimentation, Hagai Shlezinger (drums) and Eliad Wagner (piano, synthesizer) joined as new members in 1998 and completed the line-up. A year later, Sophya moved to Amsterdam, where she signed Ronny Moorings, founder and head of the Dutch formation Clan of Xymox , to his own label, Xymox Control .
In 2000, Sophya released her first album The Age of Sophya , which was released in Europe on Pandaimonium Records and in North America on Metropolis Records . From 2001 she made her first live appearances in the Netherlands, including at the Gotham Festival in Amsterdam and the Terra Gotha Festival in Vlissingen . In the same year she covered the track Figurehead by The Cure for the compilation A Night Like ... A Tribute to the Cure . This song is also the last recording by Sophya in the original line-up.
In February 2002 Shai Ledder was replaced by the Clan-of-Xymox bassist Mario Usai aka "The Haze". Sophya gave further concerts as support for Clan of Xymox in the Netherlands and in summer 2002 she performed at the Eurorock Festival in Belgium. In April 2003, Sophya published her second work, Dream .
In mid-2004, work began on the third album, Third Wish , which has meanwhile been interrupted for further concerts. A video was shot for the title More on this album in 2005, which reached number 2 on the MTV Brand: New Charts.
After switching to the Dutch label Mutantjasz Records, the long player Third Wish was released in 2006, which includes a cover version of the Joy Division classic Transmission .
