Sora (Wilthen)
Sora ( Upper Sorbian ) is a district of Wilthen in the Bautzen district in Upper Lusatia .
history
Sora was first mentioned in a document in 1477 as a place with the name Sahir , which indicates that it was cleared by fire for the purpose of reclamation. Laborious clearing of the land dragged on for centuries. Even today, stone ridges run through fields and meadows and, like the mighty stone piles on the edge of the forest, reveal the hardship and effort of clearing.
According to Arnošt Muka, 30 of the 40 inhabitants at the time were still Sorbs in 1884 . In the first half of the 20th century, the Sorbian language disappeared from everyday local life. On April 1, 1936, Sora was incorporated into Wilthen.
In the middle of the district there is a historic well room .
Devil's pulpit
In 2006 there were speculations that the Teufelskanzel rock formation could be a prehistoric cult site. A constructed-looking cave and a depression on the eastern rock tip, which according to legend was the seat of the devil, were measured for astronomical features in 2007. As a result, the rock was found to be suitable for calendar solar observations. The deepening of the devil's seat was called the “hand of the gods” because of its resemblance to a hand and gave an archaeoastronomical research project at the Sohland / Spree observatory the name “project of the gods hand”.
