Sorong is a coastal city on the Indonesian island part of New Guinea .

geography

Sorong is located in the far west of the northern Pacific coast of the Vogelkop Peninsula. After the capital Manokwari , Sorong is the second most important city in the province. It is the gateway to the filigree small island world of Raja Ampat , to species-rich coral reefs and other biological diversity also on land. The city is directly subordinate to the province of Papua Barat (West Papua) as a "city" ( Indonesian Kota ) . It is divided into 10 districts ( Indonesian district ) Sorong , West Sorong (Sorong Barat) , Sorong Kepulauan , East Sorong (Sorong Timur) , North Sorong (Sorong Utara) , Sorong Manoi , Sorong Kota , Malaimsimsa , Klaurung and Maladom Mes . South Sorong (Sorong Selatan) forms a separate administrative district (Kabupaten) that is independent of the city.

Residents

In 2010 there were 190,625 inhabitants. In 2014 the population was estimated at 219,958. Like most cities in West Papua, Sorong is dominated by Indonesian transmigrants .

Economy and Infrastructure

Sorong is home to one of the country's oil and gas centers. This results in increasing prosperity and economic growth.

The city is characterized by a beautiful beach promenade and a cityscape rich in contrasts. The nature conservation authority PKA is located in the city. Sorong Airport offers direct connections u. a. to Jakarta, the province of Papua and Makassar. In addition, shipping supplies the city.
