The basement of Kilvaxter is a ( "stone built") basement on the north-facing large peninsula Trotternish on the island of Skye in Scotland . In the case of basements , a distinction is made between "earth-cut", "rock-cut", "mixed", "stone built" and "wooden" basements. It is the small Croftersiedlung of Kilvaxter , approximately 2.5 km south of Skye Museum of Iceland Life at Kilmuir .

Basement areas usually occur in connection with Iron Age structures. More than 500 have been located in Scotland. About 20 of them are on Skye.

Kilvaxter's basement was discovered when one of the ceiling stones collapsed in 2000. It was excavated and opened to the public under the control of archaeologists. At the same time, the remains of an Iron Age building that was connected to the basement were excavated. The underground structure (basement) is around 17.0 m long and has the shape of a flat S-curve. The corridor is only 0.75 m wide and has a maximum height of 1.5 m. After heavy rains it can be very wet, so that the possibilities of use are limited.
