Southeast Iceland , in the language of Moriori and Māori Rangatira called, but by mistake on some maps as Rangitira called, is an uninhabited island in the archipelago of to New Zealand belonging Chatham Islands in the southwestern Pacific Ocean .

geography

The 2.19 km² island is located around 2 km southeast of Pitt Island and around 55 km southeast of Chatham Island , the main island of the Chatham Islands . It has a length of 2.53 km and measures 1.76 km at its widest point. The island, which is the third largest island in the archipelago after Pitt Island , has partly steep coastal cliffs and on its west side reaches a height of 224  m above sea level.

history

The island, which was used as grazing land for merino sheep , was bought by the New Zealand government in 1953 and in 1961 the last of the up to 1,400 sheep were removed from the island. Since the island was no longer used as pastureland, the forest typical of the island has recovered. Today the island is a nature reserve and is managed by the Department of Conservation .

Flora and fauna

Many rare or endemic animal and plant species are found on the island , including the critically endangered Chatham flycatcher ( Petroica traversi ). The island is also an important breeding area for seabirds , such as the rare Chatham petrel ( Pterodroma axillaris ) or the dark shearwater ( Puffinus griseus ). A colony of New Zealand fur seals ( Arctocephalus forsteri ) lives on the south coast .

Ribbonwood , the Māhoe , the Akeake , the New Zealander flax , bushes like Pohuehue , Matipo and wildflowers like the Megaherbs grow on the island .
