The province of Southland was a province in the former British colony of New Zealand , which was separated and independent from the province of Otago on March 25, 1861 by Order in Council (statutory ordinance) , but was dissolved in 1870 and reassigned to the province of Otago .

geography

The province of Southland was after its separation from the province of Otago the southernmost province of New Zealand. The boundaries of the province were given with the coordinates between 45th and 47th latitude south latitude and between 166th longitude, 15 minutes and 169th longitude, 15 minutes east longitude. The province was administratively assigned the islands of Stewart Island , Snares Islands , Auckland Islands , Enderby Island , Campbell Island , Bounty Islands and Antipodes Island .

Other descriptions of the provincial boundaries include the Mataura River in the east, the Waiau River in the west, and a line from Eyre Peak to Lake Manapouri in the north. The southern border on the South Island formed the coastline to Foveaux Strait . Then there were the islands as described above.

history

On June 30, 1952, the British Parliament the law " Act to grant a Representative Constitution to the Colony of New Zealand " passed that in New Zealand under New Zealand Constitution Act 1852 is known. The law regulates the administrative redistribution of the New Zealand colony into six provinces. The boundaries of the districts should be determined by proclamation by the governor of New Zealand. The law also stipulated that each province should have a provincial council with at least nine members and a superintendent (head, head). The law also expressly provided for the possibility of further subdivision of the provinces by Order in Council (ordinance). The General Assembly made use of this in March 1861 after separatist settlers pushed the secession. But the province was confronted with financial problems from the start that the provincial government could not get under control. After nine years of poor economic activity, the province of Southland was reassigned to the richer province of Otago and politically and administratively integrated.

On October 12, 1875, the British Parliament passed the Abolition of Provinces Act to end the administration of New Zealand over provinces. On November 1, 1876, the law became law. The provincial system was replaced by an administrative system based on boroughs and counties .
