The border troops of the USSR ( Russian Пограничные войска СССР ) were the armed forces responsible for the border protection of the Soviet Union .

They were subordinate to the State Security Service of the Soviet Union with its changing names ( Cheka , GPU / OGPU , NKVD / MGB , since 1954 KGB ) and formed part of the armed forces of the Soviet Union .

Commanders (chiefs)

The service designation of the commanders or chiefs of the border troops of the USSR has changed several times over the years.

  • 1918–1919 = SG Shamschew (Main Directorate of Border Troops, also Headquarters Border Troops [GUPW])
  • 1919–1920 = WA Stepanow (Directorate of border surveillance, also administration of border surveillance)
  • 1920–1921 = WR Menschinski ( Cheka special area - border protection)
  • 1922–1923 = AC Artusow (until 1918 Frautschi) (area border troops, area border protection [OPO])
  • 1923–1925 = JK Olski (OPO)
  • 1925–1929 = SB Kanznelson (Main Directorate Border Protection [GUPO])
  • 1929 = SG Wleschew (GUPO)
  • 1929–1931 = IA Voronzow (GUPO)
  • 1931–1933 = IM Bystrych (GUPO)
  • 1933–1937 = MP Frinowski , (GUPO, from 1934 Main Directorate Border and Internal Protection [GUPuWO]) NKVD of the USSR
  • 1937–1938 = NK Krutschinkin, (GUPuWO)
  • 1938–1939 = AA Kowalow, (GUPuWO)
  • 1939–1941 = GG Sokolow, Lieutenant General (GUPWW)
  • 1942–1952 = NP Strachnow, Lieutenant General (GUPWW)
  • 1952–1956 = PI Syrjanow, Lieutenant General (GUPWW)
  • 1956–1957 = TA Storokatsch, Lieutenant General (GUPWW)
  • 1957–1972 = PI Syrjanow , Colonel General (GUPW)
  • 1972–1989 = WA Matrosow, Army General (GUPW)
