history

The Social Science Archive Konstanz was founded in 1974 at the chair of Thomas Luckmann , the idea for this went back to the sociologist of religion Carl Mayer. An exile himself , Mayer suggested that the material still available from social scientists who had emigrated from the Third Reich should be secured in order to preserve their intellectual work from oblivion. During the preparatory work and in the early years, the archive received substantial support from the Volkswagen Foundation , the German Research Foundation , the Society of Friends and Patrons of the University of Konstanz and the Fritz Thyssen Foundation . The archive includes materials from Max Weber , Karl Mannheim , George Herbert Mead , Alfred Schütz , Helmuth Plessner , Heinrich Popitz , Hans Paul Bahrdt and Thomas Luckmann.

In autumn 2002, the Konstanz Social Science Archive was appointed the official central archive of the German Sociological Society and commissioned with researching the history of the subject. In this context, the archive is constantly expanding its holdings in order to be able to provide the most comprehensive possible material for research on the history of sociology .
