The Sozina Tunnel , Serbian - Cyrillic Тунел бр. 250 "Созина" , translated tunnel no. 250 "Sozina" , is a railway tunnel in southern Montenegro . The 6,171 m long is part of the Belgrade – Bar railway line . It is considered the longest railway tunnel in the country and was the longest tunnel in Yugoslavia under the government of Tito . It crosses under the Rumija mountain range , which separates the Montenegrin Adriatic coast from the lowlands around Lake Skadar . The southern portal is in Sutomore on the Adriatic coast, while the northern portal is a few kilometers south of Virpazar at the foot of the Rumija Mountains.
Construction of the tunnel began in 1954. It was built as part of the new standard-gauge line Bar – Titograd , which was not only intended to become a future section of the Bar – Belgrade connection, but also to replace the narrow-gauge Bar – Virpazar line. The route was opened in 1959.
Six years after the start of operations there was a major water ingress through a karst canal . A 1750 m long drainage tunnel had to be specially built so that the water flowing at 6.5 m³ / min could be drained away. This drainage tunnel is two meters below the main tunnel and 15 m laterally offset in the axis.
