The Rumija ( Cyrillic  Румија ) is a mountain range of the Dinarides in southeast Montenegro and at the same time designates the highest peak of this mountain range with 1594 m.

geography

The Rumija ridge stretches for 10 kilometers from northwest to southeast and, together with the Paštrovići Mountains, forms a natural barrier between the Adriatic Sea and Lake Skadar . Other peaks are Brisan (1435 m), Kozjak (1427 m), Loška (1353 m), Čagoglina (1297 m), Debelin (1205 m), Široka Strana (1185 m) and Vrsuta (1183 m). The mountain range ends in the south-east in Tarabosh (593 m), which has been contested over and over again in history and which is already on Albanian territory not far from Shkodra . The Rumija drops steeply towards the Adriatic coastline, a little less steeply towards Lake Skadar. The altitude difference is more than 1500 m, one of the highest altitude differences in Montenegro.

The closest town is the bar on the Adriatic Sea , from whose inland old town, Stari Bar , the summit can be hiked in about 5 hours.

traffic

Rumija and Paštrovići Mountains form a barrier between the Zeta Plain around Podgorica  and the sea. Traffic routes overcome it only in a few places. The Paštrovići Mountains can be crossed at the 876 m high Seoštik Pass and at the Poljice Pass (665 m). A single road passes the Rumija on the northern edge at the 805 m high Sutorman Pass . The Antivari railway crossed the pass in a crest tunnel  at a height of 640 m. In 1959, a new railway line was opened to Bar  , which crosses the mountain bar at the transition from Rumija to the Paštrovići Mountains in the 6170 m long Sozina railway tunnel ( Cyrillic  Тунел Созина ). The Sozina road tunnel , opened in 2005, enables rapid passage through the mountain range today. The road tunnel is 4,189 m long and has to be paid for . It reaches the coast a little north of Sutomore .

A narrow, winding road follows the southern bank of Lake Skadar and crosses the eastern foothills of the Rumija just before the Albanian border over the 480 m high Stegvaši pass .

Religious meaning

Steep west side of the Rumija

The summit of Rumija is a place of importance in Christianity. Every year at Pentecost , the cross of Jovan Vladimir is carried in procession from the village of Velji Mikulići to the summit. Traditionally, in addition to the Orthodox Christians of the Bar region, Catholics and Muslims also take part in the procession and the ascent to the summit.

In June 2005 the Serbian Orthodox Church built a chapel dedicated to the Holy Trinity with the help of an army helicopter . The construction of the approximately 3 m by 2.5 m chapel was a highly controversial matter, as it was carried out without the permission of the Montenegrin authorities and the use of an army helicopter in the run-up to the independence referendum of Montenegro was also seen as a provocation.
