Space Master (sometimes Space Master is written) is a science fiction - RPG , was originally developed by Kevin Barrett and Terry K. Amthor system and Iron Crown Enterprises is published (abbreviated ICE). It was developed in 1985 on the basis of the Rolemaster rule system and its first and second versions do not contain a given game world . The rules are designed in such a way that many different types of science fiction worlds can be represented with them. It thus pursues a partially universal approach within the science fiction genre. The last edition of the game took place under the title Spacemaster: Privateers and contains the "Privateers" universe as a game world.

Game mechanics

Equivalent to Rolemaster, and therefore compatible, Spacemaster uses a value system from 1 to 100. Characters have the same ten attributes as in Rolemaster and the properties of these characters ( see also → role-playing system ) are used in the same way as in Rolemaster. In principle, characters from Space Master can be transferred directly to Rolemaster and vice versa, only the list of possible skills and equipment is adapted to the science fiction genre and includes, for example, skills for using firearms and energy weapons as well as for handling advanced technology and vehicles. Also, instead of the magic typical of the fantasy genre in Rolemaster , Space Master has the " psionic abilities " that are more common for the science fiction genre , such as those used in Alfred Bester's science fiction novels.

development

This offshoot of the Rolemaster system, also published by ICE , the game was published in 1985 and, like Rolemaster, was designed without its own fixed background world . Therefore the role play system can be flexibly combined with almost any science fiction background . The basic principle of rule book naming has also been retained, so that Future Law contains all the rules for creating and developing characters, the skill system and information on creating foreign cultures, worlds and solar systems. Tech Law contains all technical areas such as combat, vehicles, aircraft and space vehicles as well as rules for corresponding travel companies. Just like Rolemaster, Space Master is both a complete role-playing game without a given game world, as well as a collection of optional rules that can also be built into other role-playing systems. In addition to rule extensions, numerous adventure books and game world descriptions were published.

The 2nd edition was published in 1988, in line with the rule revision that also took place for Rolemaster in 1989, but at the same time takes a step away from Rolemaster by renaming the books. The box of Space Master second edition now contains three books: GM Book, Player Book and Tech Book, a development that happened much later in Rolemaster (from 1995). With Star Strike , also published in 1988, ICE created a system for tactical space combat derived from Space Master, which was expanded in 1989 to include Armored Assault for tactical ground combat. By 1994 three expansion books with spaceships and other vehicles (Vessel Compendium # 1 to # 3), two Companions (rule expansions, equivalent to the Rolemaster Companions ), some adventures and the Aliens & Artifacts expansion, which further focus on alien races and "mysterious finds of old." "Lost Races", as they often appear in science fiction novels.

The rule extensions Dark Space (1985), Outlaw (1990) and Time Riders (1991) each represent a crossover with Rolemaster.

In 2000, Space Master finally received its last new edition from author Robert J. Defendi with Spacemaster: Privateers , in which there is a basic set of rules (atypical for the Rolemaster system), which describes the rule system sufficiently completely, but in which the supplementary books each time again with "Law "are designated. It is technically equivalent to the Rolemaster Fantasy Roleplay and also untypical for the Rolemaster system, a game universe is presented with Privateers .

Space Master was never published in German.
