The asparagus fly ( Plioreocepta poeciloptera ) is a fly from the family of bored flies (Tephritidae).
features
The flies reach a body length of 6–7 mm. The head is colored yellow on the underside. The thorax is pale gray with three black longitudinal lines. The flies have a distinctive, species-specific wing pattern. The transparent wings have a broad brown zigzag pattern. The black abdomen is slightly hairy. It is slender in the males, while it is broadened in the females. The females have a short ovipositor . The cylindrical white larvae reach a length of 7–9 mm.
distribution
The asparagus fly occurs in large parts of Europe. Their distribution area extends from southern Scandinavia and England in the north to France and Italy.
Way of life
The flies can be seen from mid-April to the end of May. The copula and oviposition take place at the beginning of the imago stage . Plioreocepta poeciloptera forms one generation per year. The female drills sprouts of the vegetable asparagus ( Asparagus officinalis ) and lays her eggs there. The hatched larvae continue to dig into the plant. They pupate and have a diapause until spring.
Harmful effect
By eating, the larvae damage particularly young asparagus plants. This makes them susceptible to fungi of the genus Fusarium .
