Spatial (from Latin spatium 'space') is used in various (technical) areas:

File management

Spatial refers to a window mode in the context of file management ( file manager ) within a desktop environment . A single window is permanently assigned to a specific directory (or folder) and vice versa. This window only represents that directory. If necessary, the size and position of the window or the background color or image and other properties are saved by the file manager.

This mode is always used by the Finder in Mac OS Classic , it can be set in the Finder of macOS . When Windows Explorer and Dolphin from KDE , this mode can also be set.

Geographic information systems

Spatial is also used in the context of geographic information systems to describe spatial (geographical) relationships.

With the PostGIS extension , the open source project PostgreSQL provides a database system that can manage geometry data and is equipped with a wide range of geometry functions. About z. B. ODBC , the database can be connected as a backend to Windows, Mac and Linux programs. QuantumGIS (Open Source) works e.g. B. directly with PostgreSQL.

With Oracle Spatial and Graph, the company Oracle offers a database variant in which geometries can be saved and managed. Spatial data types can also be managed in version 2008 of Microsoft SQL Server .

The company ESRI offers with Spatial Analyst product for raster data management.

Audio

The term "spatial" is also used in acoustics and audio playback to describe a spatial sound simulation.
