Special Encounter is an album by Enrico Pieranunzi , Charlie Haden and Paul Motian . The recordings were made during studio sessions in the Sonic Recording Studio in Rome on March 6th, 7th and 8th, 2003 and were released in 2005 by CAM Jazz .

background

The Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi had already worked with Charlie Haden in the 1980s ( Silence , including with Chet Baker ); with drummer Paul Motian he played two albums in the 1990s, Untold Story and The Night Gone By , both with Marc Johnson . Regarding Enrico Pieranunzi's album with Haden and Motian, Ira Gitler , who wrote the liner notes , noted that this session was originally intended to record ballads. In its somewhat more varied final form, Special Encounter maintained this twilight mood. They play three standards, five original compositions by the pianist and three pieces by Haden. With the exception of a lively run through Haden's “Waltz for Ruth”, which stands out a little, Pieranunzi maintains a rather gentle pace and works more with phrasing . Pieranunzi shares the song credits with his bassist Charlie Haden.

reception

Scott Yanow gave the album four stars in Allmusic and wrote: “Two of the most memorable numbers are from the bassist, with both 'Waltz for Ruth' and 'Hello My Lovely' deserving to be standards . The music is generally gentle, relaxed and lyrical, but never sleepy. These musicians know how to play softly and passionately, a rare skill. Special Encounter is a subtle pleasure. "

Aaron Steinberg wrote in JazzTimes , Pieranunzi “keeps his melodies free of superfluous tones and cleverly pushes them aside. He also varies his accompaniment with each melody, which makes this performance particularly worth listening to. Pieranunzi's best moments, however, are artful conglomerates of nice touches, from the gentle ups and downs of odd intervals in his own 'Secret Nights' to the single staccato note in the middle of a flowing melody line on 'Why Did I Choose You?' is placed. "

The critic of All About Jazz noted, " Special Encounter is a pared-down recording which, due to the lack of horns, is relatively economical [instrumentalized] and has a particularly thoughtful nighttime mood." This kind of softness and delicacy requires a rare kind of maturity, reserve and wisdom, the author sums up, qualities that abound in these three seasoned players.
